Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure that is used to remove excess fat and skin from the waist, helping to flatten and shape the stomach wall by tightening the abdominal muscles. Ideal candidates for abdominoplasty are individuals in good physical condition who would like to remove excess fat or loose skin that has proven difficult to eliminate through diet and exercise alone. Commonly known as “tummy tuck” surgery, abdominoplasty is offered at Dr. Robert Vitolo’s New York City area offices. We have four office locations in Staten Island, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and in Shrewsbury, New Jersey, and invite you to schedule a consultation to learn more about the procedure.
Abdominoplasty surgery takes approximately two to five hours and can be performed with general anesthesia or local anesthesia with a sedative. In this procedure, an incision is made across the lower abdomen, just below the bikini line. A second incision is made around the navel so that it will be correctly positioned after the excess abdominal tissue has been removed. Through the lower abdominal incision, Dr. Vitolo separates skin and fat from the abdominal wall, removing the excess fatty tissue and tightening and shortening the abdominal muscles. The belly button is then positioned in place.
Patients may be fitted with drainage tubes underneath the skin and a compression garment to ensure a swift and safe recovery from tummy tuck surgery. The drainage tubes will be removed a few days later at our New York City, Brooklyn, Staten Island, or New Jersey office. Abdominoplasty recovery time ranges from two weeks to a few months. With a balanced diet and regular exercise, results are long-lasting.
Serious complications from abdominoplasty, such as infection and blood clotting, are uncommon, but can occur. Abdominoplasty leaves a permanent scar stretching between the hips, although it is low enough for most bikinis to conceal it. This scar is very noticeable for several months after surgery, and may take time to flatten and fade. However, within a year, patients see the scar lighten and become less noticeable. While abdominoplasty can be useful for women with stretched skin and muscles from pregnancy, women candidates for abdominoplasty should be aware that the results from this procedure may diminish if they become pregnant again because pregnancy loosens the abdominal muscles.
