Can I Breastfeed After a Breast Augmentation?
Are you interested in undergoing breast augmentation surgery, but planning on having children in the future?
Read below to learn more about board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Vitolo’s recommendations on breast augmentation and breastfeeding, as well as an innovative surgical practice that could eliminate your concerns altogether.
Breastfeeding After Breast Augmentation Surgery
According to John Hopkins Medicine, you don’t have to worry about your ability to breastfeed after breast augmentation surgery – with one critical exception.
In most cases, breast augmentation surgery requires incisions to place implants either below or above the muscle tissue. If those incisions are made underneath the natural curve of the breast or within the armpit, they’re usually distant enough from the nipples (and therefore, the nipples’ nerve endings) to preserve sensation.
However, risk is slightly elevated if surgical incisions are placed around the areola (this is usually done to hide scarring or when adjusting nipple placement). Areola incisions could potentially interfere with the nipple’s nerve endings and therefore, nipple sensations. These sensations are essential for cueing in the duct’s response to release when a baby latches on for breastfeeding.
This is only a risk for women who have incisions on the breast itself, particularly an incision around the areola. Dr Vitolo’s Scar Less breast augmentation technique does not make an incision anywhere on or near the breast and there is no surgical dissection under the breast tissue, so that there is no reason to postpone your breast augmentation if you wish to nurse your child.
Dr. Vitolo’s Approach to Breast Augmentation Surgery
When it comes to incision placements for breast augmentation surgery, Dr. Vitolo doesn’t place them in the armpit, under the curve of the breast, or even around the nipple.
He places an incision in your belly button.
The Scar Less Breast Augmentation (an exclusive speciality of Dr. Vitolo’s) is a unique surgical procedure that was developed so women could achieve natural-looking breasts without disfiguring scars and long recovery periods. Deflated breast implants are placed through the belly button and up to the breast tissue, where they’re then filled with saline solution.
This unique procedure can be life-changing surgery for many women who have always wanted larger breasts, but may be nervous about potentially hurting their chances at successful breastfeeding in the future. The Scarless Breast Procedure was designed to fulfill that need, causing minimal recovery time, bleeding, and best of all…no visible scar.
