Maybe it was when you started noticing more prominent wrinkles and fine lines on your forehead. Or maybe it was when you discovered that consistent Botox use can lead to a younger-looking appearance over the long-term.

Is Botox Really Safe?

Rest easy: the answer to that question is a resounding yes.

Botox was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the early 2000s, making it one of the safest and most tested ante wrinkle treatments available on the market. In order to achieve this approval, Botox had to undergo rigorous trials that tested the product’s safety, patient results, and long-term effects of injections.

What’s more, the FDA is continuing to approve new and surprising uses for Botox. As of this publication, Botox has been approved as a highly effective migraine treatment and a long-term solution for excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), as well as reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the face.

What Does Botox Do to My Body?

Botox uses botulinum toxin type A to promote smoother, wrinkle-free skin. This active ingredient works to interrupt the brain’s nerve signals to the muscles at the injection site. These muscles become temporarily paralyzed, which helps relax the overlaying skin. As a result, wrinkles look faded, smoother, and less obvious to the eye.

Results for Botox typically last around four to five months, depending on the patient., and the severity of the wrinkles.

Does Botox Have Any Side Effects?

Botox does have some small side effects; most of these side effects disappear within the first 48 hours after injection. Side effects include slight swelling at the injection site, as well as tenderness, redness, and mild bruising.

Some people may have an allergic reaction to Botox injections, but this is unusual. There are some extremely rare complications that can occur with Botox injections that Dr. Vitolo will discuss with you.
