Liposuction is a fat removal surgery that was introduced in the United States in 1982. Dr. Vitolo was one of the first plastic surgeons to begin using this revolutionary technique and teaching others to use it. Since that time, it competes with breast augmentation as the most performed procedure in the world.

This procedure was developed to specifically target and remove stubborn fat that won’t respond to traditional diet and exercise methods. Liposuction has remained a highly popular procedure over the past three decades for good reason: it helps patients achieve the contoured body that they’ve been working so hard to achieve. While liposuction is not a weight-loss surgery, it is effective at helping patients fit more comfortably in their clothes and feel more confident in their skin.

The typical candidate for liposuction usually has a healthy diet and exercise regimen, but their body fat won’t respond to their hard work. The reason for this is simple…there are a number of areas of the body that are weight loss resistant!  In women the tummy, flanks (love handles), saddlebags, inner  thighs, and knees are programmed to not respond to weight loss like the other areas of the body.  In men, only the abdomen and flanks are weight loss resistant.  Removing those stubborn areas and re-contouring the body is now possible with liposuction, or more appropriately as we prefer to call it…LIPOSCULPTURE!  Liposculpture (fat removal surgery) can also be used to reshape other areas of the body such as under the chin, the breasts , buttocks and others.

In short, anyone in good health, who is not overly obese, with areas of the body that need re-contouring are good candidates for liposculpture. Remember, liposculpture does not result in actual weight loss. It re-contours the fat in the body by removing it from problem areas since fat does not weigh much, so there is minimal actual change in weight.

As a Board-Certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Vitolo’s approach to this procedure is like that of an artist. He visually assesses the contours of your body and sculpts away the offending fat, thus creating a more symmetrical pleasing shape for your body.

When you meet with Dr. Vitolo during your consultation, you will discuss why you want liposuction and what you expect from the procedure. Dr. Vitolo will examine you and make recommendations for your procedure.

Dr. Vitolo uses a state of the art procedure known as External Ultrasonic Assisted Liposculpture (EUAL). In this fat removal surgery, he injects fluid into the areas he wants to treat (saline+anesthetic) as most plastic surgeons do, but instead of beginning the liposculpture, he appies ultrasonic energy, through the skin to the areas he will re-contour.  The ultrasonic energy softens and semi-liquifies the fat. It is only then that he begins the liposculpture. Since the fat is in a semi-liquid state, he does not have to forcefully break up the fat, but he simply removes it through fine cannulas with suction. The ultrasound also decreases bleeding during the procedure and causes the skin to contract quicker.

When the best contour is achieved, Dr. Vitolo molds the body by applying a foam tape to the areas suctioned.  This serves to keep the new shape stabilized during healing and importantly, prevent bruising.

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia in Dr. Vitolo’s state of the art AAAASF Certified ambulatory facility, and usually takes between one and three hours.  The patient is placed in a compression garment, which is to be worn for two days then removed.

Dr. Vitolo’s patients typically return to work and most normal activities 2 to 3 days after surgery. Healing is quite quick, and many patients have their surgery on a Friday, take their compression garment and foam tapes off on Sunday, and return to work on Monday. Dr. Vitolo prefers that patients who have had a number of lower body areas done, wear a compression garment, which can easily be worn under clothes, for about 2 weeks, but this is optional.

With Dr. Vitolo’s patients, early results can be seen as soon as the compression garment is removed. The final results continue to develop over time, but usually, in a week or two, they are beach ready. Most of his patients don’t take the pain medications he prescribes, as there is minimal postoperative pain, just a little soreness for a day or two.  There is usually no visible bruising unless the inner thigh was done, in which case, there may be some.

Patients frequently remark, right after the initial garment comes off, that they can fit into clothes that were always too tight for them.
