Plastic surgeons preformed nearly 126,000 facelifts in 2012, according to statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. This procedure is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery options and the trend is expected to continue. In fact, from 2011 to 2012, there was a six-percent increase in the number of requested facelifts.

Why is the facelift such a popular procedure? One reason is that the results can reverse the signs of aging by 10 years or more. Today’s plastic surgeons have enhanced techniques and tools that avoid the “too tight” look. The natural looking results are specifically designed to complement the patient’s overall appearance.

So, when is the best time to get a facelift? Before you make any final decisions, consider your age. A recent study from Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery showed that patients under 50 years old experience the best results from facelifts. This is because the skin of the average 50 year old is still relatively elastic and shows only early signs of facial aging. Patients who have facelifts before their 50th birthdays are usually more satisfied with the results immediately following the procedure and in the years that follow.

Even though patients under the age of 50 typically have the best results, thousands of older individuals have successful facelifts every year. Healthy patients in their upper 50s, and even into their 60s and 70s, can be good candidates for facial surgery. If they’re non-smokers that have taken good care of their skin, they’ll most likely be thrilled with the results of their surgery.

If you’re considering a facelift, you’ll also want to evaluate the facial features you’d like to have addressed. Facelifts aim to correct hallow cheeks, sagging jowls, “turkey neck”, thinning in the mid-face, and creases around the mouth. However, a facelift won’t give you a totally new appearance. Your eyes and nose will retain their original look. In addition, a facelift will last for seven to ten years, but even after the procedure, you will continue to age.

It’s important to remember that a facelift is surgery. You’ll require some type of anesthesia and an extended healing time. If you’re not ready to commit to this type of procedure, your plastic surgeon can recommend some non-invasive cosmetic procedures like Botox, Restylane, or Juvederm.

Is now a good time for a facelift? Only you can answer that question. Remember to consider your age, the goals of your plastic surgery, and alternate treatment options. No matter what type of cosmetic procedure you choose, you’re on your way to seeing fresh, young, and natural-looking results.
